The Exe Estuary management partnership are hoping to create a network of volunteers around the estuary who could be involved in monitoring the Estuary and feed back their information to the partnership via this website.
In order to gather ideas from the organisations around the Exe who regularly work with volunteers a meeting was called on Monday 21st April to discuss how such a group could function and what role it could play.
In attendance were:
James Chubb, Education ranger for East devon District Council
Malcolm Davies, Reserve warden for the RSPB
Steve Ayres, Ranger at Dawlish Warren
David Price, Local Co-ordinator of the Wetland Bird Survey
and me Jenny Lockett, Exe Estuary Officer
The group discussed the types of monitoring that the volunteers could carry out and what useful information they could collect that would help us learn more about the Estuary. The types of surveys suggested were; seal sightings, invasive species and the level of activity on the Estuary.
It was decided that the group would be contacted via quarterly bulletins that would give information on what to look out for over the next quarter and feedback on the results collected so far.
As a thank you to the friends of volunteers they would receive free guided walks, social events, a password to their own section of the website and be kept up to date with Estuary news.
